WALDORF, Md. – Charles County patrol officers recovered a stolen Dodge Journey and arrested its driver during a traffic stop in Waldorf on March 23, 2026, just days after the suspect had been released from the county detention center.
Officers spotted the vehicle, which had been reported stolen, in the area of Holly Tree Lane and Western Parkway at 9:35 p.m. They conducted a traffic stop and found three occupants inside. The driver was identified as Derrick Larnell Brown, 37, of Accokeek.
Investigators determined that Brown had been arrested March 20 on a bench warrant after failing to appear in court March 17 on a prior drug charge. He was released from the Charles County Detention Center later that same day on personal recognizance. After his release, Brown stole the Dodge Journey from the parking lot of a local business and remained in possession of the vehicle until the March 23 stop.
The other two occupants were unaware the vehicle was stolen and were released without charges.
Brown was charged with theft of a motor vehicle. He was transported to the Charles County Detention Center, where a district court commissioner released him on an unsecured $3,000 bond.

No injuries were reported during the traffic stop. The recovered Dodge Journey was returned to its owner.
The swift recovery demonstrates effective coordination among patrol units in identifying and intercepting stolen vehicles in real time. Authorities did not release the name of the business from which the vehicle was taken or additional details about the theft investigation.
This arrest adds to recent enforcement actions in Charles County aimed at addressing repeat offenders and property crimes. Court records for Brown’s prior case and the new charge will be available through the Maryland Judiciary Case Search once updated.
