Prince Frederick, Md.- The Linda L. Kelley Animal Shelter in Calvert County will host a Kitten Shower on Saturday, May 9, from noon to 2 p.m., inviting families and animal lovers across Southern Maryland to support kittens and pets in need. The family-friendly event at 5055 Hallowing Point Road aims to boost community involvement, share care education and encourage adoptions and fostering as kitten season peaks.

Shelter staff and foster families will answer questions about fostering kittens and adopting pets. Attendees can learn proper care techniques and meet animals ready for new homes. The shelter, an open-admission facility, relies on community donations to cover rising needs for medical care, food and supplies during busy spring months.

A detailed wish list appears on the shelter website at www.CalvertCountyAnimalShelter.com/KittenShower. Basic items needed include kitten milk replacer, baby bottles, canned and dry kitten food, non-clumping litter, heating pads, blankets, towels, potty pads and pet-safe wipes. Extra supplies sought cover 3-cc syringes, Karo syrup, kitchen scales, small litter pans, reusable totes, easy-to-clean toys, food and water bowls, cat beds and replacement nipples.

Donations may be dropped off Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the shelter. Residents unable to attend can still contribute by contacting the Volunteer and Rescue Coordinator Jamie Hash at Jamie.Hash@calvertcountymd.gov or 410-535-1600, ext. 8008.

Calvert County’s shelter serves families in Prince Frederick, Lusby, Dunkirk, Chesapeake Beach and surrounding areas of Southern Maryland. It handles owner surrenders, strays and animals needing medical attention or socialization. Adoption fees remain affordable at $40 for cats, helping place pets with local families. The shelter also operates a Working Cat Program, matching under-socialized cats with barns, businesses or properties for natural rodent control.

Fostering provides critical support by allowing young kittens to grow in home environments and sick or injured animals to heal. Shelter officials note that volunteer foster homes free up space and improve outcomes for animals. Current programs include monthly rabies clinics in partnership with the Calvert County Department of Health and volunteer opportunities for enrichment and adoption events.

Southern Maryland residents value the shelter’s role in responsible pet ownership amid the region’s mix of rural, waterfront and growing suburban communities. Calvert County’s natural setting near the Chesapeake Bay brings unique challenges, such as managing stray populations and educating on wildlife interactions. Events like the Kitten Shower strengthen ties between the shelter and communities in Calvert, while drawing interest from neighboring Charles and St. Mary’s counties.

The shelter maintains an active presence on Instagram at @calvertcountyanimalshelter and Facebook at www.facebook.com/CalvertCountyAnimalShelter, sharing updates on available animals and care tips. Its website offers adoption questionnaires, guides and featured pets. Live at Linda’s, a biweekly talk show, features adoptable animals and veterinary advice.

Calvert County leaders emphasize the shelter’s importance to public health and quality of life. By attending the May 9 event, residents directly aid animals while learning ways to become long-term supporters through volunteering, fostering or adopting. The Kitten Shower coincides with heightened spring activity, when shelters across the region see increases in litters and surrenders.
