Maryland horse farms will open their gates for a free, self-guided tour on Sunday, May 10, as part of the annual Preakness Festival.
The Maryland Department of Agriculture’s Maryland Horse Industry Board invites residents and visitors to explore select farms from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event offers a behind-the-scenes look at where some of the state’s current and future champion horses are born, raised and trained.
Advance registration is required to visit the farms. A digital program lists participating locations and nearby agribusinesses, including farm stands and wineries that visitors can explore after the tour.
Guests will have the chance to stroll through scenic pastures, watch mares and foals in their natural setting, and learn about breeding, care and training programs that produce elite equine athletes. The tour highlights Maryland’s deep equestrian heritage and the economic importance of the horse industry.
Southern Maryland families can easily join the day trip. Many farms are located in Baltimore and Carroll counties, about an hour’s drive from Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s counties. The event ties directly into Preakness weekend traditions and offers a family-friendly way to celebrate the state’s racing legacy.
The Maryland Horse Farm Tour is presented in partnership with the Maryland Horse Breeders Association, Maryland Racing Commission, Maryland Million Ltd., Rosecroft Raceway, Cloverleaf Standardbred Owners Association, Maryland Department of Labor, Maryland Department of Agriculture and Maryland Horse Industry Board.
