The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will begin overnight repairs to damaged fencing on the MD 4 / Governor Thomas Johnson Bridge starting at 9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8.
Contractor PDI Sheetz will perform the work, closing one of the bridge’s two lanes while flagpersons guide drivers through the work zone. The project is expected to run for about two weeks, with overnight closures Sunday through Thursday from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., weather permitting.
The repairs address damage from an Aug. 25 crash in which a tractor-trailer struck a large section of fencing atop the bridge’s concrete barrier, damaging several vehicles, including a school bus. The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office sought the public’s help identifying the driver, and confirmed by late morning the following day that the driver had been identified and located.
That crash also prompted the Calvert County Department of Parks & Recreation to modify traffic flow at the nearby Solomons Boat Ramp, reducing available trailer parking and closing the sidewalk to the fishing pier, changes CCPR says will remain until SHA’s repairs are finished.
PDI Sheetz, a Linthicum Heights-based contractor, has handled previous SHA maintenance work on the span, including a 2024 pavement and navigational-lighting project. The Governor Thomas Johnson Bridge carries MD 4 across the Patuxent River between Calvert and St. Mary’s counties and sees heavy daily commuter traffic.
