The College of Southern Maryland hosted its third annual Day of Service on March 27, bringing together more than 120 students, staff, faculty and board members to support 11 local nonprofit organizations across Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s counties.
Volunteers provided hands-on help ranging from gardening and facility cleaning to food distribution and digital strategy support. The event was launched in 2024 as part of the inauguration activities for CSM President Dr. Yolanda Wilson.
“Your work and your selfless acts today reflect the heart and breath of our mission in action,” Dr. Wilson said. “This is more than volunteering. It’s about building community, creating connections, and stepping outside of our daily routines and into the lives and work of our neighbors across Southern Maryland.”

One major project took place at Spring Dell Center in La Plata. The organization assists adults with disabilities in achieving greater independence through transportation assistance, life skills programs, employment opportunities and other support services.
Volunteers rebuilt a fence, repaired and filled garden beds, organized donation sheds and painted artwork with clients to brighten the facility.

“A garden is an amazing place to come together to share a sense of accomplishment,” said Betty Garner, Community Employment Coordinator at Spring Dell Center. “For the people we support at Spring Dell Center and those in charge of the garden, this support was huge. It is an amazing thing to watch their faces when they see what they planted turn into something they can harvest and eat.”
Southern Maryland is home to dozens of nonprofits that rely on volunteer support to serve vulnerable populations. CSM’s Nonprofit Institute provides professional development, networking and consultations year-round to help these organizations strengthen their operations and community impact.
The Day of Service reflects the college’s broader commitment to civic engagement. CSM serves more than 20,000 students annually across its campuses in La Plata, Prince Frederick and Leonardtown, preparing them for careers while encouraging service to the tri-county region.
