A St. Mary’s County grandmother turned an eyesore in her driveway into a $50,000 lottery win by playing the five-digit number from her husband’s old car license plate.

The woman, who asked to remain anonymous, had been using the same combination on Pick 5 for more than a year. She hit the winning numbers in April with a $1 straight bet.

While checking the results on her phone, she realized the numbers matched her ticket. “Wait a minute. That looks like my numbers,” she said.

The medical worker said she was full of excitement when she confirmed the win. She plans to use the money to pay bills and spoil her grandchildren.

“I just stick to Pick 5. That is my game,” she said.

The winning ticket was sold at Atrium Spirits, located at 37680 Mohawk Drive in Charlotte Hall. For selling the winning ticket, the St. Mary’s County retailer receives a $500 bonus from the Maryland Lottery.

Pick 5 is one of Maryland’s most popular draw games. A straight bet matches all five numbers in exact order and pays $50,000 on a $1 wager. The game is drawn twice daily, giving players frequent chances to win.

The Maryland Lottery contributes millions of dollars each year to support public education and other state programs. Local winners like this one often use their prizes to ease financial burdens or help family members in Southern Maryland communities.

Charlotte Hall, in northern St. Mary’s County, is home to several small businesses and serves residents from across the tri-county area. Atrium Spirits has been a popular stop for lottery players in the region.

The Maryland Lottery encourages responsible play and offers resources for those who may need help with gambling-related issues.
