A Lexington Park man was sentenced to 40 years in prison with 15 years of active incarceration Monday for a shooting that occurred outside a popular bar in Leonardtown last fall.

Shaekwon Talib Jackson, 25, was convicted by a St. Mary’s County jury on April 20 following a three-day trial. The shooting took place on October 11, 2025, as patrons were leaving the bar at closing time.

Circuit Court Judge Amy Lorenzini imposed the following sentence:

  • First-degree assault: 15 years, with 6 years active.
  • Use of a firearm in the commission of a crime of violence: 15 years, with 5 years active.
  • Two counts of reckless endangerment: 5 years each, with 2 years active each.

State’s Attorney Jaymi Sterling emphasized the danger the incident posed to the community.

“The defendant brazenly opened fire during closing time outside of a popular bar and carelessly placed many lives at risk,” Sterling said. “This night could have ended more tragically because of the sheer number of innocent bystanders that were spilling out into the parking lot. It was miraculously and thankfully a non-fatal incident. The safeguarding of our community remains the top priority of our office.”

Assistant State’s Attorneys Shaye Reynolds and Savanna Duncan prosecuted the case. Detective Warren Forinash of the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office led the investigation.

Leonardtown, the county seat of St. Mary’s County, is known for its historic downtown, waterfront and family-friendly atmosphere. The shooting occurred in an area frequented by local residents and visitors, making the case particularly concerning for the tight-knit community. The swift investigation and conviction reflect ongoing efforts by the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office and State’s Attorney’s Office to address gun violence and keep public spaces safe.

Jackson was taken into custody following the verdict and is being held at the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center.

The sentencing comes as St. Mary’s County continues to focus on public safety initiatives. Local leaders and law enforcement have worked to strengthen community partnerships and respond quickly to incidents that threaten residents in Leonardtown, Lexington Park and surrounding areas.
