The Commissioners of St. Mary’s County will host the 40th Annual Flag Day Celebration on Sunday, June 14, 2026, at 6 p.m. at the Leonard Hall Recreation Center, located at 23145 Leonard Hall Drive in Leonardtown.
This year’s ceremony marks a meaningful milestone as the community gathers to honor the American flag and the values it represents. As the nation approaches the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the event carries added significance — offering an opportunity to reflect on shared history, patriotism and community pride.
The family-friendly program will feature a procession by various color guards and veteran groups from around St. Mary’s County, a special Flag Day service highlighting the history of the American flag, and an official Flag Retirement Ceremony demonstrating the dignified and proper method of disposing of worn, torn or tattered flags.
Attendees can also enjoy hand-held American flags, food, music, fun activities for kids and more.
A special highlight this year will be a performance of the National Anthem by the cast from the Department of Recreation & Parks’ 44th Annual Summerstock Production of Disney’s Frozen: The Broadway Musical.
Community members are encouraged to drop off flags in need of retirement in advance at the Chesapeake Building, located at 41770 Baldridge Street in Leonardtown.
The annual Flag Day event has become a beloved tradition in St. Mary’s County, bringing residents together to celebrate the symbol of freedom and the sacrifices made to protect it. Leonardtown, the county seat with its historic downtown and waterfront setting, provides a fitting backdrop for the ceremony at Leonard Hall Recreation Center.
The celebration underscores the strong sense of patriotism and community spirit that defines St. Mary’s County, home to Naval Air Station Patuxent River and a rich military heritage. Families from Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s counties regularly participate in the event, which serves as a reminder of the shared values that unite the region.
