ANNAPOLIS — The Maryland Department of Natural Resources has released the 2026 Shooter Qualification Session Schedule for hunters who need a Shooter Qualification Card to participate in certain managed deer hunts.
Many fall and winter managed hunts require hunters to attend a qualification session and pass a proficiency test before receiving the card. The department has scheduled at least 27 sessions at 11 locations across the state. Additional sessions may be added by reservation. Some sessions operate by appointment only and may charge a small fee to cover costs. Hunters should bring photo identification and may need eye and hearing protection at certain sites.
Managed hunts aim to reduce deer populations in urban, suburban and some public land areas where overbrowsing can damage vegetation and increase conflicts with people. These hunts follow strict rules and provide a controlled method for population management.
DNR selects participants for many managed hunts through a lottery system. Lottery deadlines appear on the Wildlife and Heritage Service website. The department updates the online shooter qualification calendar as new sessions are added.
Hunters in Southern Maryland can review the full schedule on the DNR website to identify nearby or convenient locations. Qualification ensures participants demonstrate safe handling and accurate shooting skills before entering controlled hunts. The process supports the department’s goal of maintaining safe and effective deer management programs.
The Shooter Qualification Card remains valid for multiple seasons once obtained, though hunters should confirm current requirements for each hunt they enter. Contacting the hosting organization before attending provides the most accurate details on fees, equipment needs and session format.
