MECHANICSVILLE — The Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department has added Raft 2 to its fleet, a lightweight inflatable boat designed for water rescue operations in challenging conditions.

The vessel is a 2025 INMAR 380-SR model measuring 12 feet 6 inches. It features Hypalon-neoprene construction and an aluminum floor for durability. Power comes from a 30-horsepower Tohatsu four-stroke outboard motor equipped with a prop guard for crew safety. The complete unit weighs approximately 350 pounds, allowing it to be hand-carried to launch points where traditional boat ramps are unavailable.

Raft 2 will be towed by one of the department’s utility vehicles and will respond alongside Squad 2, the heavy rescue squad. This setup allows crew members to arrive on scene already wearing water rescue gear and prepared for immediate deployment. The addition improves access to extremely shallow water areas during floods or swiftwater incidents.

MVFD members completed several months of training before placing the boat in service. The department outfitted the craft with specialized rescue equipment. Funding for Raft 2 came entirely from proceeds of the department’s Annual Public Auction Fundraiser held last summer.

Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department provides emergency services in St. Mary’s County, including water rescue support. The new boat strengthens the department’s ability to operate in flood-prone or low-water environments common in parts of Southern Maryland.
