LEONARDTOWN — The Leonardtown Town Council held its regular meeting on June 8, 2026, with several public hearings and approvals on zoning, development fees and infrastructure projects.

The meeting began with an invocation and the Pledge of Allegiance. Councilmember Earhart read a proclamation recognizing LGBTQIA+ Pride Month. The council approved the minutes from the previous meeting.

Treasurer Sharon Strand presented the treasurer’s report. The council approved two budget amendments. One amendment (BA2026110) addressed a solar panel grant. The second (BA2026111) covered wastewater treatment plant sludge removal.

Planning Department Director Mike Bailey provided an update. The council approved a Verizon cell tower case located near McDonald’s along Route 5. Bailey also reviewed the previous planning and zoning meeting from May 18 and noted the next meeting on June 20.

Police Chief Deputy Richard Wilhelmi presented the police report. Town Administrator Laschelle McKay delivered her report, which included four public hearings.

At 4:15 p.m., the council held a public hearing on Ordinance No. 233, a comprehensive zoning map amendment for property annexed along Cedar Lane Road in December. The council received one public comment and approved the ordinance.

At 4:30 p.m., the council held a public hearing on Ordinance No. 234 regarding development impact fees. These fees will support schools for new dwellings starting July 1. The council received no public comments and approved the ordinance.

At 4:45 p.m., the council held a public hearing on Case No. 100-15 E for Meadows at Town Run Phase 5. One phase remains in the development. The council received two public comments and approved the project.

At 5:00 p.m., the council held a public hearing on Case No. 16-26 for the Evergreen at Cedar Lane expansion. The project will add 70 rooms to address a current four-year wait list. The council received no public comments and approved the ordinance.

David Yingling and Courtney Jenkins from the county presented on the potential addition of Leonardtown to the proposed Calvert-St. Mary’s Metropolitan Planning Organization expansion. The council decided by consensus to continue conversations with the county.

The council introduced Ordinance No. 235 for changes to resource protection standards for forest conservation. No action was taken. The council approved a limited extended warranty for the composite elevated tank, which covers inspections, cleaning and maintenance of the town’s water tanks for the next 10 years.

Main Street Manager Jennifer Misner provided an update. Mayor Daniel Burris delivered the mayor’s report, which included an LBA report. Council reports covered events, community development and planning, utilities, SMMA and business development.

The next Town Council meeting is scheduled for Monday, July 13, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. Mayor Burris will hold a “Meet the Mayor” session for 30 minutes following the close of the June 8 meeting. Council meetings are available on the town’s YouTube channel.
