LA PLATA — The Charles County Animal Care Center is seeking foster homes for five young kittens that have arrived at the shelter and require temporary care.
The kittens are still too young for adoption and need a foster family for a couple of weeks while they grow bigger and stronger. The shelter provides all necessary supplies, and fosters provide a safe space and daily care.
Foster homes play a key role in animal shelter operations. Young kittens often require extra attention, including socialization and monitoring as they develop. Placing them in homes reduces stress on the shelter and gives the animals individual attention that supports healthy growth.

The Charles County Animal Care Center encourages residents with a spare room, bathroom or quiet corner to consider fostering. Volunteers who can provide a stable environment help the kittens prepare for eventual adoption.
Fostering also benefits the broader community by supporting the shelter’s capacity to care for other animals in need. Local residents who participate contribute directly to animal welfare efforts in Charles County.
Those interested in fostering can email ccaccfoster@charlescountymd.gov to begin the process. The shelter will provide guidance on care requirements and answer questions about the commitment.
Animal care centers across the region rely on foster volunteers to bridge the gap between intake and adoption. Programs like this one allow shelters to focus resources on medical care and finding permanent homes while young animals receive individualized attention.
Residents who cannot foster but want to help can consider other forms of support, such as donations or spreading the word about available animals. Checking the shelter’s website or visiting in person provides updates on current needs.
The Charles County Animal Care Center continues to serve the community by caring for stray, abandoned and surrendered animals. Foster programs extend that mission by involving local residents in the care process.
