The Chesapeake Baysox continued their strong run with a 2-0 shutout victory over the Binghamton Rumble Ponies on Sunday afternoon, marking their fifth consecutive win and third shutout of the season.

Left-hander Luis De León delivered one of his strongest outings of the year for Chesapeake. The starter worked through the first three innings without allowing a hit and limited the Rumble Ponies to just one hit overall in his six innings of work. De León struck out a Double-A career-high nine batters while walking three and hitting one. He escaped his only real threat in the fourth inning by striking out two consecutive hitters after a single put runners on base, with catcher Ethan Anderson throwing out a runner attempting to steal.

The Baysox manufactured their first run in the fourth inning without the benefit of a hit. Consecutive walks to Anderson and Thomas Sosa, followed by a sacrifice bunt from Griff O’Ferrall, set up a wild pitch that allowed the game’s opening run to score. Chesapeake added an insurance run in the sixth when Frederick Bencosme and Anderson delivered back-to-back singles. Sosa followed with a sacrifice fly to deep right field that scored Anderson.

Binghamton left-hander Jonathan Sartucci took the loss after allowing both runs over six innings. The Baysox bullpen preserved the shutout in the late innings, with right-handers Alex Pham, Richard Guasch, and Gerald Ogando combining for three scoreless frames. Ogando earned the save by working a clean ninth.

The victory improved Chesapeake’s record to 7-4 in their current stretch and moved the team to 36-43 overall in the Eastern League. The Baysox have shown improved pitching depth in recent games, with starters and relievers working together to limit opponents’ opportunities. De León’s performance highlighted the staff’s ability to miss bats and induce weak contact when needed.

The team’s current five-game winning streak has come against a Binghamton club that has struggled to find consistent offense. Chesapeake’s ability to score without relying heavily on hits in certain innings demonstrates the small-ball approach and opportunistic play that has defined recent successes.

The Baysox will look to extend their winning streak when they open a six-game series against the Akron RubberDucks on Tuesday night in Akron. Right-hander Evan Yates is scheduled to start for Chesapeake against the Cleveland Guardians’ Double-A affiliate. The series represents the second half of a 12-game road trip before the team returns home after the MLB All-Star Break.

Chesapeake is scheduled to begin a nine-game homestand at Prince George’s Stadium on Friday, July 17, against the Hartford Yard Goats. The return to Bowie will give Southern Maryland fans another opportunity to watch the Orioles’ top prospects in action during the second half of the season.

The Baysox’ recent form has been built on strong starting pitching and reliable relief work. De León’s career-high strikeout total and the bullpen’s ability to strand runners have been key factors in the current streak. Anderson’s work behind the plate, including throwing out runners attempting to steal, has added another layer of defensive stability.

As the team continues its road trip, maintaining this level of execution will be important for building momentum heading into the second half. The combination of timely hitting, solid defense, and quality pitching has allowed Chesapeake to string together wins against a competitive Eastern League opponent.

For fans in the Southern Maryland area, the Baysox remain a popular destination for affordable, high-level minor league baseball. The team’s affiliation with the Baltimore Orioles provides a direct link to the major league club and gives local supporters a chance to follow future big-league talent.

The upcoming homestand after the All-Star Break will feature several weekend games that typically draw strong crowds to Prince George’s Stadium. The Baysox will look to carry the positive energy from their current road success into those home contests.
