LEONARDTOWN, Md. — The St. Mary’s County Historical Society is celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2026, highlighting 75 years of dedicated work collecting, preserving, researching, and sharing the rich history of one of Maryland’s oldest counties. Founded in October 1951, the Society has grown into the largest county historical society in Southern Maryland and one of the most prominent in the state.
With approximately 700 members and a collection nearing 600,000 records, the organization safeguards materials spanning from Maryland’s earliest colonial period through the generations that followed. Its holdings document individuals, communities, institutions, historic properties, and pivotal events that have defined St. Mary’s County. The Society makes these resources available to the public through collections, publications, educational programs, and research assistance.
For residents, genealogists, students, property owners, and others seeking reliable information, the Historical Society functions as a vital county-wide resource. Questions about family lineages, historic homes, churches, neighborhoods, schools, old documents, or significant local moments are routinely answered through its archives and expertise.
“Seventy-five years ago, this Society was founded on the belief that the history of St. Mary’s County is worth preserving and passing on,” said Historical Society President Admiral Timothy Heely, USN (Ret.). “That belief continues to guide us today. Through the dedication of our volunteers and members, we work to protect the County’s historical record, make it accessible to the public, and deepen appreciation for the people, places, and events that shaped this community.”
Heely emphasized the Society’s ongoing role: “Local history gives people a stronger understanding of who they are and where they live. … As we mark this milestone, we are also recommitting ourselves to the work ahead — strengthening the Society’s resources, broadening public awareness of what we offer, and ensuring that the history of St. Mary’s County remains available and meaningful for future generations.”
