ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. — St. Mary’s College of Maryland Associate Director of Athletics and Recreation for Internal Operations Jim Cranmer announced the hiring of Doug Corbett as the next head coach for both the men’s and women’s tennis programs. Corbett begins his duties July 8.

“We are excited to welcome Coach Corbett to our Seahawks family. His commitment to developing student-athletes both on the court and in the classroom aligns perfectly with our department’s values,” Cranmer said. “We are confident that Coach Corbett’s leadership, passion for the sport, and dedication to building a positive team culture will have a lasting impact on our men’s and women’s tennis programs.”

Corbett joins St. Mary’s after five seasons as head men’s and women’s tennis coach at NCAA Division III Maryville College in Tennessee. There, he engineered significant improvements for both programs in the Collegiate Conference of the South.

“Thrilled to be a part of the St. Mary’s community! … On the court, I am confident we will not only continue to compete for championships, but we will take our program to the next level by becoming competitive in the NCAA Tournament,” Corbett said. “Excited to provide the excellent experience that our student-athletes truly deserve. … Go Seahawks!”

At Maryville, Corbett led the men’s team to a 12-7 record in 2025-26 — their first winning season — and a six-match improvement from his debut year. He was named 2025-26 CCS Men’s Tennis Coach of the Year after guiding the team to the conference tournament semifinals as the No. 3 seed. He coached four all-conference players and the 2025-26 CCS Men’s Tennis Rookie of the Year, finishing with a 36-53 overall record.

On the women’s side, Corbett compiled a 43-44 record, including a strong 22-13 conference mark. He mentored seven all-league players and helped the team improve by 4.5 matches in one season, reaching 12 wins in 2023-24 — the program’s highest total in over a decade.

Before Maryville, Corbett spent four seasons as an assistant men’s tennis coach (and one season with the women’s team) at NCAA Division III University of Mary Washington. He was named the 2017-18 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Men’s Tennis Assistant Coach of the Year.

A native of Charlottesville, Virginia, Corbett was a four-year starter and two-time team captain at NCAA Division III Randolph College. He earned a B.A. in Sports and Exercise Studies with a minor in Psychology in 2017 and later completed a Master’s in Coaching and Sport Leadership from Randolph in 2021.

Corbett’s hiring continues St. Mary’s College of Maryland’s commitment to competitive athletics within the United East Conference while prioritizing student-athlete development. The Seahawks tennis programs will look to build on recent successes under his leadership.
