Whether you’re in the mood for live theater, hands-on history, or learning to cook crabs three different ways, Southern Maryland has a packed lineup this weekend. Here’s what’s happening Friday through Sunday, Aug. 14–16.
Friday, Aug. 14
Start the morning with the Family Nature Walks at Annmarie Garden: Backyard Birds (11 a.m.–noon), the latest installment in Annmarie’s 2026 walk series tied to its “Plumage and Place: Birds of the World” exhibit. Each walk opens with a show-and-tell before heading out through the garden’s forests and fields.
In the afternoon, head to Leonard Hall Recreation Center for the final Friday Summer Skate of the season (1–4 p.m.), themed “Beat the Heat” with popsicles and cool treats to send off summer. Admission is $5, with skate rentals available for $2.50.
That evening, foodies can dig into Crabs 3 Ways: A Chesapeake Bay Culinary Experience at No Thyme to Cook in Solomons (6 p.m.), a hands-on class covering steamed, grilled and baked crab techniques. Pricing has run around $119–$140 per person in past seasons; check with the venue for current cost and availability.
Also Friday evening, Shakespeare in the City presents Macbeth takes the Reconstructed State House Lawn at Historic St. Mary’s City at 7:30 p.m. This Jazz Era-set adaptation, staged with the Newtowne Players, carries a PG-13 advisory. Tickets range from $15 (children) to $20 (general admission).
Saturday, Aug. 15
Early risers can join the Fossil Field Experience at Cove Point Lighthouse (9 a.m.–noon), a Calvert Marine Museum program where visitors search the beach for fossilized shell, bone and shark teeth before working with an educator to identify their finds.
At the same hour, From Farm to Table: A Chesapeake Bounty Tour and Cooking Class begins at Chesapeake Bounty Farmers Market (9 a.m.), where Chef Gwyn and Chef Muriel lead a guided market visit before heading to No Thyme to Cook for a hands-on class turning fresh, local ingredients into a seasonal meal.
Later that morning, the Drayden African American Schoolhouse Monthly Open House runs 11 a.m.–2 p.m. at one of the nation’s best-preserved one-room African American schoolhouses, hosted with the Unified Committee for Afro-American Contributions. Admission is free, with donations accepted.
Sunday, Aug. 16
Step back into 1998 with Step Into the Past: The Louis Goldstein Office (11 a.m.) at the Calvert County Visitor Center, a free, no-registration tour of a recreated office belonging to Louis L. Goldstein, Maryland’s longest-serving state elected official and a Calvert County native.
Wrap up the weekend with Beyond the Displays: Artifact Stories at the Calvert Marine Museum (1:30 p.m.), where museum educator Lori explores select artifacts, including how World War II shaped Solomons and hidden details tucked into the museum’s murals. Included with regular museum admission.
