ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. — The St. Mary’s College of Maryland men’s lacrosse team has once again demonstrated excellence in the classroom, earning the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Division III Team Academic Award for the fifth consecutive season. Seniors Adam Martin ’25 and Joe Szymanski ’25 were also named USILA Scholar All-Americans, pushing the program’s total recipients to 18.
The Seahawks posted a team grade point average of 3.32 during the 2025-26 academic year, leading the United East Conference. The USILA recognizes programs achieving a team GPA of 3.0 or higher. This sustained success underscores the program’s commitment to balancing athletics and academics.
Head Coach Jason Childs, in his 11th season, expressed pride in the team’s accomplishments. “I remain very proud of the work this team puts into their academics. We have been a part of this award since its inception and it is a testament to the legacy of those young men who came before this team,” he said. Childs also praised Martin and Szymanski: “What an honor for Adam and Joe! … They epitomize what a DIII student-athlete is all about.”

Martin, a 5-11 defenseman from Kent Island, achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA in his senior year as an economics and business administration double major. He was named the 2026 United East Senior Scholar-Athlete for men’s lacrosse and earned spots on the conference Winter/Spring All-Academic Team for three straight seasons. Martin was also selected to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Men’s At-Large Team three times. On the field, the team captain recorded 90 ground balls and 55 caused turnovers while earning two First Team All-United East honors.
Szymanski, a 6-4 defenseman from Easton, maintained a 3.76 GPA as a business management major with an economics minor. He earned two United East Winter/Spring All-Academic Team selections and CSC Academic All-District honors in 2026. His playing career included Honorable Mention USILA All-American status, two Intercollegiate Men’s Lacrosse Coaches Association All-Region nods, two United East Defensive Player of the Year awards, and two First Team All-Conference selections. He amassed 172 ground balls and 61 caused turnovers.
Together, Martin and Szymanski contributed to four United East tournament titles, four regular-season championships, and three NCAA Division III Tournament appearances (2023-2025). Their honors mark the fourth straight season with at least one Seahawk Scholar All-American and the first with multiple selections since 2013.
St. Mary’s College of Maryland continues to build a strong reputation in the United East Conference for developing well-rounded student-athletes. The men’s lacrosse program’s consistent academic recognition reflects the high standards set by coaches, players, and the institution’s liberal arts focus in Southern Maryland.
