WASHINGTON — Visitors to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute can immerse themselves in elephant culture, conservation and celebration during EleFest, a three-day event leading up to World Elephant Day on Wednesday, Aug. 12.
The festival takes place Friday, Aug. 7, through Sunday, Aug. 9, offering after-hours experiences, early morning yoga sessions with the Zoo’s elephant herd, live performances, family activities and interactive art installations. The events aim to connect guests with one of the Zoo’s most iconic species while highlighting conservation efforts.
EleFest kicks off Friday, Aug. 7, with an adults-only Happy Hour from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at the Elephant Community Center and Elephant Outpost. Attendees can enjoy a complimentary elephant-themed batch cocktail, catch a glimpse of the Zoo’s newest elephant calf Linh Mai, test their knowledge with wildlife trivia and enjoy live DJ entertainment. A commemorative 5-ounce wine glass will be available for purchase.
Tickets for the 21+ event go on sale today for members at $25 per individual and for non-members on Tuesday, June 16, at $25. Day-of tickets are $30. Guests must be 21 or older with valid ID required. Parking passes are available for members or can be purchased by non-members.
On Saturday, Aug. 8, and Sunday, Aug. 9, guests can participate in Yoga with Elephants inside the Elephant Community Center during two morning sessions each day from 7 to 7:45 a.m. and 8 to 8:45 a.m. Participants practice yoga alongside the Zoo’s elephant herd in a serene setting. A complimentary elephant-branded cooling towel is included with each $75 ticket. Attendees must be 12 or older.
The main festival programming runs both weekend days from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., featuring elephant-themed activities, cultural experiences and family-friendly entertainment throughout the Zoo. Highlights include traditional Thai dances by the Somapa Thai Dance Group on Saturday, elephant-themed story times with the DC Public Library, community chalk mural activities by Chalk Riot on Sunday, and South Indian dance performances and workshops from the Rhythmaya Dance Group.
Additional demonstrations, performances and interactive experiences focused on elephants and wildlife conservation will be available. Free entry passes and parking options are available via the Zoo’s website.
The events underscore the Zoo’s commitment to Asian elephant conservation. Elephants face significant threats in the wild, and programs like EleFest help raise awareness and support for protection efforts both locally and globally.
Parking is limited and requires advance passes for most events. Metro Bus (D70) and Metro Rail (Woodley Park-Zoo or Cleveland Park) provide convenient public transportation options.
