UPDATE August 11, 2026: The house fire that sent two Leonardtown Volunteer Fire Department firefighters to the hospital Monday morning started in a resident’s recreational vehicle before spreading to the house itself, according to a new report from the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal.
The Fire Marshal’s Southern Region office classified Monday’s blaze at 42551 Woodbury Place as a recreational vehicle fire that extended into the residence, a 5th-wheel camper parked at the rear of the property. Investigators estimated $100,000 in structural damage and another $25,000 in damage to contents, for a total loss of roughly $125,000. One resident was displaced; the report notes that person was not home when the fire broke out and is being assisted by family. A neighbor first discovered the fire, according to the report, and its cause remains undetermined pending further investigation.
The update follows Monday’s initial account from Leonardtown VFD, which said crews were alerted to the fire at approximately 6:53 a.m. and found a two-story home with heavy smoke showing on arrival. After circling the building, crews located the camper fully involved in flames at the rear of the house, with fire spreading to the deck, the side of the home, and into the attic. One engine crew stretched a 400-foot hoseline to attack the fire from the rear while a truck company set up ground ladders and began operations on the home’s second floor. The department reported the fire was brought under control at 7:48 a.m., about 55 minutes after the initial call — a timeline that differs from the Fire Marshal’s report, which lists a 30-minute time to control; the discrepancy has not been resolved and may reflect different starting points used by each agency to measure control time.
Ten mutual aid units assisted at the scene, including Hollywood, Ridge, Second District, Seventh District and Bay District volunteer fire departments; two companies from Naval District Washington; and St. Leonard, Solomons and Prince Frederick volunteer fire departments. The Fire Marshal’s report separately lists 40 total firefighters and one alarm.
Two Leonardtown firefighters were taken to St. Mary’s Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the fire department’s account. The Fire Marshal’s Notice of Investigation lists no injuries or deaths, but that report is understood to reflect what investigators knew at the time it was filed and may not yet have accounted for the firefighter transports reported separately by Leonardtown VFD.

A truck company arrived shortly after and set up multiple ground ladders around the building while crews began operations on the second floor.
The fire was marked under control at 7:48 a.m., about 55 minutes after the initial call. Crews remained on scene afterward assisting investigators from the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal, who is handling the cause investigation.
