Maryland State Police have arrested and charged a 17-year-old from Lexington Park in connection with a shots-fired incident last month in St. Mary’s County, after a search of the teen’s home turned up a loaded handgun.
Troopers from the Leonardtown Barrack were called to a recreation center in the 23000 block of Wildewood Drive in California around 1:30 a.m. on July 27 for a report of an assault and gunfire. State police have not released additional details about the assault or whether any injuries or arrests have been reported, and asked anyone in the Wildewood community with home surveillance cameras to review recordings from around the time of the incident, along with drivers who were in the area with dash cameras. The Criminal Enforcement Division took over the investigation from there, and evidence gathered during that work eventually led investigators to identify the teen.
On Monday, Aug. 10, investigators from the Criminal Enforcement Division’s southern unit, along with the Maryland State Apprehension Team, Leonardtown Barrack troopers, the Special Operations Division, and deputies from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office, executed a search warrant at the teen’s residence. They seized a loaded Glock 23 handgun, several rounds of ammunition, and firearm accessories.
The teen was taken into custody the same day without incident and was transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center, where he was awaiting a commissioner’s review. Consistent with standard practice for juvenile suspects, state police have not released his name.
