A Crofton woman was sentenced Aug. 11 for stealing a combined $185,296.28 from a former employer and a state-created insurance fund over several years, Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown announced.
Carolyn Rae Aldridge, 56, was sentenced by Judge Stacy W. McCormack in the Circuit Court for Anne Arundel County on two separate felony theft schemes, which she pleaded guilty to in March. She had faced up to 25 years in prison combined between the two cases.
In the first scheme, Aldridge stole 96 checks from American Builders Corporation, Inc. (ABC Builders) between August 2017 and January 2021, totaling $173,004.43 in losses. Aldridge worked as ABC Builders’ office manager and used her position to deposit the stolen checks into her personal bank account. ABC Builders is a Millersville-based home improvement and general contracting business.
In the second scheme, Aldridge stole 13 checks from the Maryland Automobile Insurance Fund (MAIF) between January 2020 and February 2021, totaling $12,291.85. She was working as an associate in MAIF’s fiscal department at the time and deposited those checks into her personal account as well.
For the ABC Builders scheme, Aldridge was sentenced to five years incarceration, with all but 173 days suspended, followed by five years of supervised probation. She was ordered to pay $173,004.43 in restitution to the company. For the MAIF scheme, she received a five-year sentence with the full term suspended, and paid the $12,291.85 in restitution in full at the sentencing hearing.
An Anne Arundel County grand jury indicted Aldridge on both schemes in June 2025. At the time, Brown said stealing from an employer — whether a private business or “a state-created entity like MAIF” — is a betrayal of trust that undermines public confidence and erodes institutional integrity, and that individuals who exploit their positions “will be identified, investigated, and prosecuted.”
The case was prosecuted by Assistant Attorney General Timothy Lake of the Criminal Division’s Fraud and Corruption Unit, under Division Chief Katie Dorian and Unit Chief Alexander Huggins. Brown also thanked Maryland Insurance Administration Investigator William Wagner, former Forensic Auditor Suzzanne Jones, and Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney Anne Colt Leitess for their assistance.
