The IRS has added a new feature to its Individual Online Account system: a digitally authenticated Tax Compliance Report that taxpayers can generate and download on demand to prove they’ve filed returns and paid taxes on time, the agency announced August 20.
The report is meant for situations where someone needs to show proof of tax compliance to a third party — applying for a job, a loan, a government benefit, or another service that requires it. Each report carries an IRS-issued digital certificate and built-in verification features embedded directly in the file, which the agency says lets banks, government agencies and other organizations confirm the document’s authenticity without contacting the IRS separately.
“By providing a secure, digitally authenticated report, the IRS is making it easier for taxpayers to access and share important information while protecting privacy and data integrity,” said Frank J. Bisignano, the IRS’s chief executive officer.
Bisignano’s title is itself somewhat unusual — the IRS has historically been led by a commissioner, and Bisignano has held the “chief executive officer” title since October 2025 while simultaneously serving as commissioner of the Social Security Administration, a dual role he’s held since May 2025.
The new report builds on other additions the IRS has made to individual online accounts in recent years, including access to W-2 and 1095-A information returns added last year, according to Accounting Today’s coverage of the rollout. That outlet also noted the addition comes even as the agency has faced significant cuts to its technology budget and staffing in recent years — context that wasn’t addressed in the IRS’s own announcement.
Every Tax Compliance Report includes the same standardized authentication and verification features, according to the agency, meaning recipients don’t need to evaluate different report formats depending on when or how a taxpayer generated theirs. The report is accessible anytime through a taxpayer’s existing IRS Individual Online Account, without needing to call the agency or visit an office in person.
