St. Mary’s County Recreation & Parks will host its annual scholarship fund golf tournament, the R&P Classic, on Friday, Oct. 2, at Wicomico Shores Golf Course in Mechanicsville. Registration is open now for both teams and individuals.
Proceeds from the tournament support the department’s youth scholarship program, which helps children in St. Mary’s County participate in summer camps, sports leagues, and other recreation programs at a discounted rate. Over the tournament’s decades-long history, it has raised more than $200,000 for the fund — a total that has grown steadily each year, climbing from roughly $185,000 several years ago to more than $195,000 in 2025 before crossing the $200,000 mark this year. Last year’s tournament alone brought in $10,000 in net proceeds.
Team registration costs $375 for a group of four and includes 18 holes of golf, door prize entry, a light breakfast, lunch, and a limited supply of on-course beverages throughout the day. Individuals can register for $94 to be grouped with a team. Registration is capped at 30 teams and is available online through the county’s website.
Local businesses and organizations can support the event through door prize donations, hole sponsorships, or direct contributions to the scholarship fund; a sponsorship packet with details is available from the department. This year’s tournament welcomes back Playground Specialists, Inc. as the returning Birdie Finder Sponsor.
Beyond the tournament itself, families can also contribute to the scholarship fund directly through the county’s “G.O.L.F.” — Giving Opportunities for Local Families — program, which allows a $25 donation to place a name on a plaque displayed at the R&P main office in Leonardtown.
Scholarships funded through the program typically provide a discount on registration for one recreation activity. To qualify, applicants must be current St. Mary’s County residents and either receive free or reduced-price school lunch or provide proof of an Independence Card.
