The College of Southern Maryland women’s soccer team shut out Garrett College 1-0 on Saturday in McHenry, riding a second-half goal from LJ May to move to 2-0 to start new head coach Thomas Wasley’s tenure.
May broke the scoreless deadlock with an unassisted goal in the 70th minute, and it held up as the only score of the match. CSM controlled play throughout, out-shooting Garrett 10-2 behind multiple attempts from Lily Stiffler, Gabrielle Casetta, and Yaliyah Reyes, though only May’s shot found the net. Goalkeeper Raynna Ratchford needed just one save to preserve the shutout, facing a single shot on goal all afternoon. Garrett’s Payton Finley kept her team in the match at the other end, making 10 saves on 11 shots on goal. Garrett’s Taylor Fife picked up a yellow card in the second half.
The win comes on the heels of Wasley’s coaching debut, a 5-1 rout of CCBC Catonsville in which Casetta scored three goals. CSM enters the season looking to build on a 13-4-1 2025 campaign that saw the program reach the NJCAA Region 20 Championship game as the No. 1 seed and 22nd-ranked team nationally, before falling to Anne Arundel — the program’s first appearance in that title game since 2013.
