The St. Mary’s College of Maryland men’s soccer team split a pair of matches at its home Seahawk Classic over the weekend, shutting out Baruch College 3-0 on Saturday before falling 1-0 to Lehman College on Sunday to move to 3-3-0 on the season.
Saturday: SMCM 3, Baruch 0
Baruch (0-3) outshot the Seahawks 8-6 in a back-and-forth first half, but St. Mary’s broke through in the 21st minute when sophomore forward Matthew Kuwik bent a shot around the Baruch defense off a long pass from junior midfielder Zach Blaum. The Bearcats held that margin until the 72nd minute, when junior forward Nick Haney split two defenders on a long feed from sophomore Marco Mazzola and slipped a shot past Baruch keeper Zaid Mohamed. Blaum added an insurance goal in the 87th minute off a cross from senior Franco Reyes, capping a game in which he finished with a goal, an assist, and six shots.
St. Mary’s out-shot Baruch 20-17 for the match, including a 7-5 edge in shots on goal, while corners were even at six apiece. Senior captain Zack Reed made five saves to record his first shutout of the season. Baruch’s Klaidi Shaho and Anthony Prado each had three shots, and the Bearcats used two goalkeepers — Dzmitry Piatrashka and Mohamed — who combined for four saves.
Sunday: Lehman 1, SMCM 0
A day later, the Seahawks couldn’t solve Lehman College (1-1-1) in a scoreless, evenly played first half. Lehman broke through in the 71st minute when Ibrahim Ouedraogo headed in a cross from Abdula George for his first goal of the season. St. Mary’s pressed for an equalizer down the stretch — forward Lucas Evans hit the post, Nick Haney rang a shot off the crossbar, and Lehman keeper Matthew Strainz turned away another Evans attempt — but the Seahawks couldn’t find the net.
Lehman edged St. Mary’s 12-11 in total shots and held a 3-1 advantage in shots on goal, while the Seahawks controlled corners 7-4. Senior Jordon Eckman made two saves in net for St. Mary’s. Strainz picked up his first shutout of 2026 for Lehman.
St. Mary’s, which improved to 3-2 with Saturday’s win before Sunday’s setback, returns to action with a road trip to Johns Hopkins (2-2-1) on Sept. 16, followed by a matchup at Bridgewater (Va.) on Sept. 19.
