The St. Mary’s College of Maryland women’s soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to the University of Mary Washington on Wednesday evening, Sept. 16, at Jamie L. Roberts Stadium.
The Seahawks (1-4-3) and Eagles played to a scoreless draw through the opening 45 minutes. St. Mary’s College goalkeeper Breanna Brown made three saves in the first half to keep Mary Washington off the scoreboard, while the Seahawks recorded two shots.
Mary Washington broke through in the 58th minute when Layla Royster scored off an assist from Maci Landel. The Eagles added another goal just over four minutes later, with Naomi Knight finding the back of the net, again assisted by Landel. Mary Washington added an insurance goal with just 17 seconds remaining, as Emma Braxton scored off an assist from Marla Vera-Sanchez.
Brown finished with five saves for the Seahawks, who were outshot 21-5 and faced a 12-0 deficit in corner kicks. St. Mary’s College also committed 12 fouls to Mary Washington’s seven and was whistled for two offsides to none for the Eagles. Mary Washington goalkeeper Emily Orn made two saves to preserve the shutout.
St. Mary’s College recorded two shots on goal, with Katie Wingard and Alexandra Sarrach each putting an attempt on frame. Megan Rusk led the Seahawks with two shots overall.
The Seahawks return to action Saturday, Sept. 19, when they travel to face Rowan at 5 p.m.
The loss continues a difficult stretch for St. Mary’s College, which fell to Lynchburg despite 11 saves from Brown last weekend. Brown and teammate swept United East’s weekly conference honors just days earlier after her 8-save performance secured a scoreless draw with McDaniel, and the Seahawks had earlier rallied past Hood College, 2-1, to open the season.
