ANNAPOLIS, Md. — St. Mary’s College of Maryland’s sailing teams spent the weekend of September 19-20 at the U.S. Naval Academy, competing in three regattas at once: the Chesapeake Invitational, the Chesapeake Open, and the Faye Bennet MAISA Women’s Singles Conference Championship.
The Seahawks turned in their best showing at the Chesapeake Invitational, finishing second out of six teams with 153 points. Sophomore skipper Mason Cook and sophomore crew Haley Temme led the way in Division A, placing second overall with 38 points after winning Race 8A and taking second in Races 4A, 6A, and 7A. In Division B, first-year skipper Owen Fretwell and sophomore crew Lauren Choi came in third with 45 points, including a pair of second-place finishes in Races 1B and 2B. St. Mary’s also fielded a Division C boat, with skippers Davide Bazzoni and Scott Opert sailing alongside sophomore crew Molly Dowling, finishing third with 70 points and a third-place result in Race 8C.
At the Chesapeake Open, a nine-team field, St. Mary’s again finished second, this time with 72 points. Junior skipper Joe Marynowski and junior crew Elise Jones won three races — 1A, 4A, and 7A — on their way to second place in Division A with 25 points. In Division B, first-year skipper Colin Krebs and senior crew Mary Govan finished third with 47 points, highlighted by a third-place result in Race 3B.
In individual competition, senior skipper Lina Carper placed 10th at the Faye Bennet MAISA Women’s Singles Conference Championship with 129 points, finishing just three points behind ninth-place Gianna Dewey of Old Dominion University.
The Seahawks stay busy this coming weekend, sending sailors back to Annapolis and to Kings Point, New York, for three more events September 26-27: the MAISA Match Race (Intrepid Trophy) at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, the Navy Fall Open, and the Navy Women’s regatta, all set to start at 10 a.m.
