Calvert County’s animal shelter is bringing back its Halloween adoption promotion, and this October the treat could be a free adoption.
The Linda L. Kelley Animal Shelter in Prince Frederick is running “Ghouls Just Wanna Have Homes” from Thursday, Oct. 1, through Saturday, Oct. 31. Anyone who adopts during the month gets to draw a prize from the shelter’s “spooky cauldron.” The prize could be a fully waived adoption fee, a half-off adoption or a treat bag full of candy.
It isn’t just cats and dogs. Animals of all ages are waiting at the shelter, including rabbits, pigs and goats.
Every adoption includes spay or neuter surgery, a microchip, age-appropriate vaccinations and a starter-care package to help the animal settle into its new home.
The promotion doesn’t change the shelter’s standards. Every potential adopter still goes through the usual screening process, so each animal goes to a safe and appropriate home.
The October push follows a hectic late summer. In August, the shelter and its friends group asked for urgent community help with fosters, supplies and adopters after a large animal control case brought in a surge of animals. The shelter also waived adoption fees through August as part of Clear the Shelters. In September, the county cut dog and cat license fees in half, to $3.50 for spayed or neutered pets and $10 for unaltered pets. County law requires dogs and cats over five months old to be licensed and vaccinated against rabies.
The shelter, at 5055 Hallowing Point Road in Prince Frederick, is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. To schedule an appointment, call 410-535-7387.
