The St. Mary’s College of Maryland volleyball team needed all five sets Friday night to get past McDaniel College. The Seahawks took the deciding set 15-11 for a 3-2 win at the Michael P. O’Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena.
Set scores were 25-21, 21-25, 23-25, 25-23 and 15-11.
St. Mary’s controlled the opener 25-21, putting down 18 kills in the set. McDaniel answered with a 25-21 win in the second, hitting .300 in that set. The Green Terror then edged the third 25-23 to put the Seahawks one set from a loss. St. Mary’s responded with a 25-23 win in the fourth to force a decider. In the fifth, the Seahawks hit .238, their best percentage of the night, while holding McDaniel to .037, and closed it out 15-11.

Julia Bobrowski led the Seahawks with 16 kills and 24 digs and added two service aces. Faith Shockley had 11 kills on .346 hitting and four blocks. Sanaa Porter added 11 kills and a team-high five blocks. Hope Parrish and Stella Marrero each had nine kills, and Marrero also picked up 19 digs.
Camilla Galeano ran the offense with 28 assists, 17 digs and three aces, and Lauren Panageotou added 21 assists. Elizabeth Childs led the back row with a team-high 28 digs.
As a team, St. Mary’s had 68 kills, 61 assists, 108 digs and eight aces, and out-hit McDaniel .146 to .123. McDaniel won the block battle 13-9 behind six blocks from Kaitlyn Saidat. Mariya Carson and Annika Cortez each had 11 kills for the Green Terror, Cassy Poteet had 34 assists, and Stephanie Buttons had a match-high 31 digs.
The win comes after a sweep of Regent and a comeback from two sets down against Cairn. St. Mary’s is now 11-5 overall and 2-0 in the United East Conference. The Seahawks travel to Penn State Berks on Tuesday, Oct. 6, for their third conference match of the season.
