Marylanders who got more time to file their 2025 state income tax returns are almost out of it. The extension ends at midnight Thursday, Oct. 15, the Comptroller’s Office said in an Oct. 13 reminder.

The deadline applies only to people who received an extension. Most taxpayers filed by the regular April deadline.

An extension gives more time to file, not more time to pay. Tax owed for 2025 was due in April, and unpaid balances can carry interest and penalties. Filing by Thursday avoids adding a late-filing problem on top of that.

First fall deadline on the new system

This is the first extension deadline since individual taxpayers moved to Maryland Tax Connect, the Comptroller’s free online portal, on Sept. 1. The state shut down its old systems in late August to move more than 4 billion records into the new one. The Chronicle reported on that transition in July.

Through Tax Connect, taxpayers can file their Maryland returns, make payments, check refund status and view their accounts. Filers who haven’t used it yet need to register, and instructions are on the Comptroller’s individual tax hub.

The switch hasn’t been smooth for everyone. At an Oct. 13 Leonardtown Town Council meeting, a council member said Maryland taxpayers with problems are waiting about 20 weeks for a response, and that Amish and Mennonite families who don’t use the internet have struggled with the move to online filing and payment.
