ST. MARY’S CITY — Sophia Kent made a season-best 18 saves, but No. 3 Christopher Newport kept St. Mary’s College of Maryland without a shot until the fourth quarter and won 4-0 Monday in non-conference field hockey.
Christopher Newport (11-1) was the fourth nationally ranked team the Seahawks (7-7) have faced this season, according to SMCM Athletics. The Captains finished with a 33-3 edge in shots, 22-1 in shots on goal and 14-3 in penalty corners.

How it unfolded
The Captains outshot St. Mary’s 16-0 in the first quarter and still could not score. Kent, a junior from Chesterville, Md., and a Gunston School graduate, stopped 10 shots in the period, and the defense blocked five more.
Christopher Newport broke through early in the second quarter when Emma Weber scored twice in 71 seconds, at 15:36 and 16:47. Caroline Hughlett assisted the first. St. Mary’s then held the Captains scoreless for the rest of the half.
Ella Elliott made it 3-0 at 40:03, deflecting a Kelly Via shot at the far post. The Seahawks took their first shot at 52:16, when sophomore forward Josie Mascolo of Leonardtown, a St. Mary’s Ryken graduate, drove a ball that Christopher Newport goalkeeper Anna Mosciano saved out of bounds, giving St. Mary’s back-to-back penalty corners.
Calli Martin closed the scoring at 58:50 on a pass from Isabel Tamayo. Ella Fallen and Mosciano combined for the Captains’ ninth shutout of the season.
