PRINCE FREDERICK — Quest has been waiting more than four months for a couch to curl up on.
The dog, estimated to be about 4 years old, has lived at the Linda L. Kelley Animal Shelter since early June. Shelter staff introduced her as the animal of the week at the Calvert County Board of County Commissioners meeting Oct. 20 and described her as a big sweetheart whose “love language is just cuddling.”
Her timing matters. Staff told commissioners the shelter has filled up with dogs and cats over the last couple of weeks and is pretty full right now.

About Quest
Quest came to the shelter as a stray, so staff know little about her history. They describe her as calm and well-mannered. She enjoys getting outside to run and play, but mostly she wants company. Volunteers who walk her say she is sweet and affectionate.
She was relaxed enough during her appearance before the commissioners to settle in and appear tired by the end of it, and she took a quick liking to one commissioner.
A Halloween deal
Through Oct. 31, the shelter’s “Ghouls Just Want to Have Homes” promotion lets adopters draw a prize from a spooky cauldron. Prizes include a waived adoption fee, a half-price adoption or a treat bag of candy, according to the county’s announcement at the meeting.
The shelter has more than dogs and cats. Staff listed rats, mice, guinea pigs and rabbits among animals available, and the county’s announcement also mentioned pigs and goats.
Other ways to help
People who cannot adopt can foster. Staff said even a short stay in a home helps them learn more about an animal’s behavior. Volunteers walk dogs, socialize cats, do laundry and dishes and make enrichment items for the animals.
The shelter also takes donations, including treats, wet and dry dog and cat food and bedding.
