LA PLATA — Tita, Toto and Tammy have decided the animal shelter is a scary place, and the Charles County Animal Care Center wants to change their minds.
The three 8-week-old kittens are timid around people, and the center is asking for a foster home that can take them for just two weeks. The goal, the center said in a Facebook post, is to teach the kittens that humans can be pretty great, one gentle pet and head scratch at a time.
The center supplies what the kittens need. The foster family supplies the time, patience and attention.

Why a short stay matters
Kittens this young are still learning how to read the world around them. A noisy shelter can make shy kittens hide, and hiding kittens are harder to place. A couple of weeks in a quiet home, with regular handling from the same people, gives them a chance to come out of their shells before they look for permanent families.
That makes this a good fit for someone who has wanted to help shelter animals but can’t commit to adopting. The request is short, the supplies are covered and the job is mostly lap time.
The post drew quick interest. Several commenters offered to take the kittens or asked whether they will be available for adoption. The center did not say in the post when the three will be ready for adoption.
How to help
Anyone interested in fostering Tita, Toto and Tammy can email the center’s foster program at ccaccfoster@charlescountymd.gov to get started.
Not ready to foster? The Charles County Animal Care Center regularly has dogs and cats looking for homes. Recent residents have included Sophie, a 12-year-old Yorkie mix, and a puppy named Ice Ice Baby.
