LA PLATA — Nova has two talents, according to the people who care for her: playing with toys and making treats disappear.
The 10-month-old, 50-pound dog is up for adoption at the Charles County Animal Care Center, which introduced her on its Facebook page Nov. 1. Staff describe her as a fun-loving girl who knows some commands, enjoys playtime and can entertain herself when it is time to settle down.
That last trait matters for a dog her age. At 10 months, Nova is still a young dog with plenty of energy, but a pup who can amuse herself is often an easier fit for a household where people work or are away for part of the day. Her post drew dozens of shares within a day, and one commenter asked what breed she is. The shelter did not list a breed.

A week to thank shelter staff
Nova’s debut landed at the start of National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week, which the Charles County Commissioners proclaimed for Nov. 1-7 during an Oct. 28 recognition session. Two longtime shelter employees accepted the proclamation: Amanda Elder, the shelter clerk, who has worked there since 2012, and Lisa Goldsmith, the animal care data specialist, who marks 12 years on Nov. 3.
The Animal Care Center is part of the county’s Animal Care and Control operation, which also includes the Animal Control division. The county says the shelter works to offer low-cost adoption programs, encourages spaying and neutering to reduce the number of homeless animals and promotes responsible pet ownership.
Nova is the latest in a steady line of animals the shelter has featured this fall, including Sophie, a 12-year-old Yorkie mix, and three shy kittens who needed a foster home.
