ST. MARY’S CITY — Harrison Greenwald won five individual events in two days, and the Atlantic East Conference noticed.
The St. Mary’s College of Maryland junior was named the Atlantic East Men’s Swimmer of the Week, the league announced Monday, Nov. 2. It is the second weekly honor of Greenwald’s career, and it keeps the award in Seahawks hands for a second straight week after sophomore Brendan Mannion earned it Oct. 26. St. Mary’s swimmers have now won both men’s awards the conference has handed out this season.
Greenwald, of Eldersburg, Md., and a graduate of Century High School, did most of his damage in a back-to-back weekend that split the Seahawks’ results. St. Mary’s lost 156-106 to Randolph-Macon College on Friday, Oct. 30, then rebounded with a 186-71 win over Stevenson University on Saturday, Oct. 31. Both were non-conference dual meets.
Distance, fly and IM, all in one weekend
Even in the loss to Randolph-Macon, Greenwald swept three individual races that cover very different skill sets, from a middle-distance freestyle to the grueling 400 individual medley. He also anchored the Seahawks’ winning 400 medley relay.
Against Stevenson, he moved up to distance freestyle and won twice more, then added a runner-up finish in the 200 individual medley.
| Meet | Event | Place | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Randolph-Macon (Oct. 30) | 200 freestyle | 1st | 1:47.58 |
| Randolph-Macon (Oct. 30) | 200 butterfly | 1st | 2:06.29 |
| Randolph-Macon (Oct. 30) | 400 individual medley | 1st | 4:15.85 |
| Randolph-Macon (Oct. 30) | 400 medley relay (anchor) | 1st | 3:36.84 |
| Stevenson (Oct. 31) | 1,000 freestyle | 1st | 10:17.65 |
| Stevenson (Oct. 31) | 500 freestyle | 1st | 4:53.60 |
| Stevenson (Oct. 31) | 200 individual medley | 2nd | 2:01.21 |
That is five individual wins, a second place and a relay victory across seven swims in roughly 24 hours. The range matters for a dual-meet team: a swimmer who can win a 200-yard butterfly one night and a 1,000-yard freestyle the next gives a coach options to stack points wherever an opponent is thin.
Greenwald’s weekend helped St. Mary’s improve to 3-1 in dual meets. The Seahawks opened the season with two wins in late October before the Randolph-Macon loss, their first dual-meet defeat of the year.
St. Mary’s next travels to Bridgewater, Va., for a non-conference dual meet against Bridgewater College at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7. Bridgewater enters 2-0.
