ANNAPOLIS — St. Mary’s County will keep its Republican state senator, but its three House of Delegates seats are headed for a split, according to unofficial returns from the Maryland State Board of Elections updated at 9:21 a.m. Wednesday.
Sen. Jack Bailey, R-District 29, led Democrat Chuck Borges 25,387 to 18,607 across the full district, a margin of 57.7% to 42.3%. Republicans Matt Morgan and Todd Morgan led their House races in 29A and 29C, while Democrat Adrianne M. Mathis led in 29B.
The returns include early voting, Election Day votes and mail-in ballots counted so far. Provisional ballots had not been reported, and more mail-in ballots are still to be counted, so margins can shift. All Election Day precincts in districts 27, 28 and 29 had reported.
District 29: Bailey wins St. Mary’s and the Calvert piece
Bailey carried both parts of the district. In St. Mary’s, he led 21,675 to 15,033. In the slice of Calvert County inside District 29, the race was far tighter: Bailey led Borges by 138 votes, 3,712 to 3,574, according to the Calvert results page.
The House races, district-wide totals from the state’s House of Delegates results:
- 29A: Republican Matt Morgan 10,873 (68%), Democrat Jennifer Lynn Clancy 5,115 (32%).
- 29B: Democrat Adrianne M. Mathis 6,544 (57.1%), Republican BJ Hall 4,907 (42.8%).
- 29C: Republican Todd B. Morgan 9,824 (59.4%), Democrat Shaara Watts 6,680 (40.4%). Morgan led in both St. Mary’s and Calvert.
Mathis’s 29B race was the only one of the three where the Democrat led. It is also the smallest of the three in votes cast.
District 27: Harris leads, Calvert dissents
In the District 27 Senate race, which covers parts of Calvert, Charles and Prince George’s counties, Democrat Kevin M. Harris led Republican Al Larsen 32,129 to 17,840, or 64.2% to 35.7%. Calvert voters went the other way: Larsen carried the county’s portion 14,800 to 11,712. Harris took the Charles portion 7,529 to 2,002, according to the Charles results.
The three District 27 House seats split by party:
- 27A: Democrat Darrell C. Odom Sr. 13,023 (84.6%), Republican Jim Crawford 2,340 (15.2%).
- 27B: Democrat Jeffrie E. Long Jr. 11,588 (66.6%), Republican Dan L. Thomas 5,786 (33.3%). Thomas won the Calvert portion, 5,035 to 4,375, but Long’s margin elsewhere in the district carried him.
- 27C: Republican Mark N. Fisher 9,966 (58.2%), Democrat Jennifer M. Davidson 7,131 (41.7%). The subdistrict lies entirely in Calvert.
District 28: Charles stays Democratic
In District 28, which lies entirely in Charles County, Democrat C.T. Wilson ran unopposed for state Senate and drew 40,692 votes. For the district’s three House seats, Democrats Debra Davis (33,629), Abena Affum-McAllister (32,679) and Edith J. Patterson (31,589) each led Republicans James Emerson Ashburn (11,825) and Winfield W. Clark Jr. (11,098) by roughly 20,000 votes.
The pattern matches the rest of the ballot. Charles backed Democrats up and down the ticket, while Calvert and St. Mary’s leaned Republican, as the Chronicle’s county roundups for St. Mary’s, Calvert and Charles show.
The winners will take their seats when the General Assembly convenes in January. Before then, county boards of elections will count the remaining mail-in and provisional ballots. St. Mary’s scheduled a post-Election Day mail-in canvass for Nov. 5, provisional ballots on Nov. 12 and a final canvass on Nov. 13, according to a county release.
