The Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education (MAEOE) recertified 12 Charles County Public schools, as well as the Nanjemoy Creek Environmental Education Center, as 2018 Maryland Green Schools. The Maryland Green School program honors schools for their commitment to developing stewards of the Earth and reducing environmental impacts.
The 2018 Maryland Green Schools in Charles County are:
- Gale-Bailey Elementary School;
- Dr. James Craik Elementary School;
- Arthur Middleton Elementary School;
- Samuel A. Mudd Elementary School;
- J.C. Parks Elementary School;
- Piccowaxen Middle School;
- North Point High School;
- General Smallwood Middle School;
- Milton M. Somers Middle School;
- Thomas Stone High School;
- William B. Wade Elementary School; and
- Westlake High School.
The Green School application process takes two years to complete and requires schools to demonstrate efforts to integrate sustainable practices, classroom integration of environmental issues, conservation practices and examples of existing community partnerships to enhance environmental learning. Schools must apply for recertification every four years and continue to demonstrate environmental education efforts.
The Green School designation recognizes schools for using resources to educate students and staff on environmental changes in Maryland, modeling environmental practices in building and landscape design, and demonstrating how to maintain these practices. Additionally, Green Schools are recognized for building and maintaining partnerships within their local communities to enhance environmental learning and to design programs to result in a healthier environment.
The Maryland Green Schools program also is aligned with Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement goals and supports Maryland State Department of Education graduation requirements. Currently, there are 618 active Green Schools in Maryland and 44 Green Centers.
