The Board of Education at its May 8 meeting honored four Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) students for their accomplishments in the areas of academic achievement, career readiness and personal responsibility. Principals select one student annually for recognition before the Board.
Honored were Jonas Agyeman, Jason Gregory, MarShawn Jackson and Lilliana Smith.
Agyeman is a fifth-grade student at J.P. Ryon Elementary School. He was honored before the Board in the area of academic achievement. He is a positive role model for his peers and maintains honor roll grades. He loves to read and takes accelerated math. He offers assistance to others in class and has a kind and friendly personality. Agyeman is a member of the school math team and chess club. His teachers say he is often overheard telling his peers that being smart is “cool.” Outside of school, Agyeman enjoys playing football and basketball. He plans to pursue a career playing professional sports or becoming a physical education teacher.
Gregory is a fifth-grade student at William A. Diggs Elementary School. He was recognized by the Board in the area of career readiness. His teachers refer to him as a “beacon of light” in the classroom. He is helpful to his peers and demonstrates a kind and respectful demeanor in all that he does. He receives gifted services in math and is an integral member of the school math team. Gregory is active with the Diggs Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement (MESA) team and is an honor roll student. Outside of school, Gregory plays travel baseball. He aspires to play professional baseball and study architectural engineering.
Jackson is a senior at Thomas Stone High School. She was honored before the Board in the area of academic achievement. She is an honor roll student and among the top 20 highest performing students in the senior class. Jackson is a student in the Pharmacy Technician program at the Robert D. Stethem Educational Center and plans to study nursing after she graduates. She completed several Advanced Placement (AP) classes and is a member of the school soccer and track and field teams. Jackson also serves as a student aide to the Stone guidance department and is well known as a dedicated and committed student.
Smith is a seventh-grade student at General Smallwood Middle School. She was recognized before the Board in the area of personal responsibility. She leads by example and often is asked by her teachers to demonstrate activities and directions for her classmates. She is helpful to school staff and manages tasks such as maintaining student mailboxes, helping transport school breakfast carts and helping teachers with their student reward carts. Smith is well known among her teachers and peers as a student who is kind, helpful and caring. Smith is an example of a Smallwood student who embodies Smallwood’s character expectations, known as TERK, which stands for tolerance, effort, rigor and kindness.
The Board each month honors students and staff members nominated by their school principal for recognition.
