CalvertHealth Foundation accepting applications for 2022-2023 academic year scholarships: The CalvertHealth Foundation Scholarship Fund is offering tuition assistance to students who are pursuing higher education in medicine or allied health fields. Since its inception, the scholarship fund has awarded more than 510 scholarships totaling more than $755,000 to area students.

Carrie Akins named 2022 CTE Administrator of the Year: The Maryland Career and Technical Administrators (MCTA) chapter of the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) named Carrie Akins, Principal of the Career and Technology Academy as the 2022 CTE Administrator of the Year. She is being recognized for her demonstrated commitment to Career and Technical Education (CTE) through her innovation, accomplishments, and contributions to the CTE community.

Calvert CTE Students Compete in SkillsUSA Regional Competition: Calvert County Public Schools (CCPS) students competed at the recent Southern Maryland SkillsUSA Regional competition winning 9 gold, 7 silver, and 7 bronze medals. The event was hosted by Career and Technology Academy on February 5, 2022, where Career and Technical Education (CTE) students from the Calvert Career and Technology Academy in Calvert County, the Robert D. Stethem Educational Center, and North Point High School in Charles County, and the Dr. James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center in St. Mary’s County participated in the event.

Crabs Re-Sign Offensive Player of the Year: The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs announced the signing of two players for the 2022 season on Friday afternoon, inking deals with Rubi Silva and Alfonso Reda.

Charles Board honors outstanding students: The Board of Education at its Feb. 8 meeting honored five Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) students. School principals annually select one student and staff member for Board recognition. Students are honored for accomplishments in the areas of academic achievement, career readiness and personal responsibility.

Three arrested in Waldorf for guns, drugs, distribution: On February 8, members of the Charles County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) Narcotics Enforcement Section, served two search warrants in Waldorf as part of an investigation into drug distribution.

St. Mary’s County:

Bill to ban PFA’s named after late SoMD Firefighter George “Walter” Taylor: In a virtual press conference today, Senator Sarah Elfreth and Delegate Sara Love, joined by the Professional Fire Fighters of Maryland, announced their legislation that would limit the sale of firefighting foam, rugs, and carpets, and food packaging that contains intentionally added per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, otherwise known as PFAS.

UPDATE:Pax River Naval Air Station Solid Curtain Exercise wreaks havoc on evening rush hour: On February 9, 2022, at approximately 8:30 am, the Pax River Naval Air Station shut down two of the three gates to perform a training exercise during their two-week-long Citadel Shield-Solid Curtain training exercise. Reports from that time indicated an hour to two hours to gain access to the base.

Golden Beach Road crossover to be closed following overnight crash:  At approximately 9 p.m. on Thursday, February 10, 2022, The Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department responded to a motor vehicle crash at Golden Beach Road and Maryland Route 5. A full-sized pickup truck crossed into the grassy median and collided with the pole that held the northbound side and center crossover traffic lights.

Celebrating Maryland’s Healthcare Heroes: Governor Hogan Launches Poster Competition, Asks Maryland Students For Submissions: Governor Larry Hogan today called on Maryland students in pre-K through grade 12 to submit poster designs that depict “Celebrating Maryland’s Healthcare Heroes”—the theme of a new Healthcare Heroes Poster Competition, organized in partnership with the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). The governor first announced the competition Tuesday as part of Healthcare Heroes Appreciation Week.

Governor Hogan asks Maryland State Board of Education to rescind school mask mandate: On Thursday, February 10, 2022, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan sent a letter to President Clarence Crawford and other members of the Maryland State Board of Education asking them to rescind the state’s school mask mandate. The letter was also sent to Senate President Bill Ferguson, House Speaker Adrienne Jones, and Mohammed Choudhury, State Superintendent of Schools.

Governor Hogan Announces New Booster Action Plan, $2 Million VaxCash 2.0 Promotion for Boosted Marylanders: Governor Larry Hogan today announced a new booster action plan to get more Marylanders fully protected from COVID-19 and its variants. The plan includes the launch of a $2 million VaxCash 2.0 Promotion, which will award $2 million in cash prizes to a total of 12 Maryland residents who have received their booster shot. The promotion kicks off next Tuesday, Feb. 15, with a special initial drawing of $500,000.
