In an exciting announcement for music enthusiasts, Music from Poplar Hill has revealed the third event of its 2023-24 season, featuring the innovative musical collaboration DONG XI. The duo, comprised of world percussionist Tom Teasley and Chinese dulcimer artist Chao Tian, is set to perform on Friday, March 15, 2024, at 7:30 p.m., at the historic St. George’s Episcopal Church in Valley Lee, Maryland.

DONG XI, which translates to “East West,” has been celebrated for its unique blend of musical styles that bridges Eastern and Western cultures through a mesmerizing mix of world music, funk percussion, and Chinese Folk melodies played on the yanqin (Chinese hammered dulcimer). Their ability to create a spellbinding musical dialogue has earned them the WAMMIE Award for Best World Music Artist/Group in 2020 and a nomination for Outstanding Sound Design at the 2020 Helen Hayes Award.

The concert promises an evening of improvisational magic that evokes the spirit of the Silk Road, where audiences will be treated to a virtuosic exchange between Teasley’s dynamic percussion and Tian’s mastery of the dulcimer. For those interested in a preview of their captivating performances, a TedX Tysons performance is available online.

Tickets for the much-anticipated performance are currently on sale, with the event offering open seating to accommodate attendees. Concertgoers are encouraged to take advantage of the weather-permitting opportunity to arrive early, enjoy a picnic or warm beverage, and explore the beautiful grounds of St. George’s Episcopal Church, which will open at 5:30 p.m. for this purpose.

In addition to the evening concert, DONG XI is engaging with the community through special programs aimed at young audiences. On March 14, students from Chesapeake Public Charter School, Bay Montessori School, and local homeschoolers will enjoy a free educational session with the duo at St. George’s Episcopal Church. The following morning, March 15, DONG XI will visit Leonardtown High School and Leonardtown Middle School, marking Music from Poplar Hill’s first foray into public school programming. This initiative, made possible through collaboration with local education and arts leaders, underscores the series’ commitment to enriching the musical knowledge of children and youth in the community.

Music from Poplar Hill: The Jo Ricks Music Series, named in honor of Jo Ricks, a beloved figure in the Southern Maryland and Washington, DC communities, aims to bring a diverse range of musical talents to the region.
