The Chesapeake Regional Association of Student Councils (CRASC) has unveiled the finalists vying for the 2024-2025 student member position on the Anne Arundel County Board of Education. This prestigious role, known for being the only student position in the nation with full voting rights on a local Board of Education, has narrowed down to three outstanding 11th-grade students.

The finalists, announced via CRASC’s Instagram page (@CRASC_Online), emerged from an initial pool of five applicants. They are Miguel Castañeda from Severna Park High School, Hafsa Hamdaoui of Crofton High School, and Divine Kainessie representing Glen Burnie High School. The selection process underscores the competitive and rigorous criteria these students met to advance to the final stage.

Serving as a student member on the Board of Education (SMOB) offers a unique opportunity to impact educational policies and decisions. This role is not only a significant responsibility but also a privilege that comes with a substantial reward—an $8,000 college scholarship. The chosen student will serve during their senior year of high school, following appointment by the Governor of Maryland.

The significance of this position cannot be overstated. Anne Arundel’s student member stands alone nationally, with full voting rights on their local Board of Education. This distinction emphasizes the county’s commitment to involving students in the educational decision-making process, providing them with a real voice in shaping the future of their schools.

As part of their final selection process, the candidates will participate in a debate, offering them a platform to present their visions and policies. This event is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 4, 2024, and will be broadcasted on AACPS’ YouTube channel, allowing the wider community to engage with the candidates’ proposals and perspectives.

In addition to the debate, the finalists will engage in various campaign activities leading up to the final vote. These events, detailed on www.aacps.org/crasc, will further showcase the candidates’ commitment and qualifications for the role. It is a critical time for these students as they present their case to the CRASC delegates, who will cast their votes in late April to decide the next student member on the Board of Education.

The position of SMOB is a testament to Anne Arundel County’s innovative approach to educational governance, highlighting the importance of student involvement in shaping the policies that directly affect them. The selected student will have a unique opportunity to contribute to the educational landscape of their community, ensuring that the student body’s voice is not only heard but also has the power to influence outcomes.

As the community awaits the final decision, the anticipation builds around which of these three remarkable students will take on the challenge of representing their peers on the Board of Education. Their participation in the upcoming debate and campaign activities will be crucial in determining who will earn the privilege of serving as the 2024-2025 student member, marking a significant milestone in their educational journey and in the history of Anne Arundel County education.
