LEONARDTOWN, MD – In a significant session held in Leonardtown, the Commissioners of St. Mary’s County (CSMC) took strides in local governance and community engagement through a series of proclamations, approvals, and a budget work session. The meeting underscored the commissioners’ commitment to addressing both immediate and long-term needs of the county.

The session began traditionally with an invocation and the Pledge of Allegiance, promptly moving to the consent agenda’s approval, setting the stage for a focused and efficient meeting. The commissioners highlighted the importance of social work and gender equality by presenting proclamations for National Social Work Month and Equal Pay Day, respectively. These proclamations serve as a reminder of the county’s dedication to recognizing and solving critical social issues.

In a gesture of appreciation and recognition, the CSMC celebrated the efforts of volunteer members of local Boards, Committees, and Commissions. This acknowledgment not only served to thank the volunteers for their invaluable service but also acted as a call to action for more community members to get involved. Those interested in contributing to the governance and development of St. Mary’s County can learn more and possibly join these vital bodies through the county’s dedicated webpage.

A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to the County Administrator’s Time, where future meeting agendas were reviewed. The commissioners approved the purchase of monitoring equipment for the St. Mary’s Dam, showcasing their commitment to environmental conservation and public safety. Additionally, they approved and decided to transmit the FY 2025 Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) Transportation Priority Letter to MDOT, highlighting transportation as a key priority for the county’s development and connectivity.

The session also included a legislative update from the Office of the County Attorney, ensuring transparency and keeping the community informed about legislative matters affecting the county.

In the afternoon, the focus shifted to fiscal responsibilities and future planning during the Budget Work Session (BWS). The county has facilitated community engagement and feedback on the budget through the Budget Engage Page, where residents can access BWS videos, view the meeting schedule, and leave feedback on local priorities.

The next CSMC business meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 19, 2024, at 9 a.m., with a Budget Work Session following at 1:30 p.m. These meetings, open to the public, will be held in the CSMC Meeting Room of the Chesapeake Building. The sessions are accessible live on the St. Mary’s County Government Channel 95 and can be viewed on-demand on the SMCG’s YouTube Channel, ensuring that governance remains transparent and accessible to all.
