In a remarkable display of skill and strategy, the College of Southern Maryland (CSM) secured two wins against Frederick Community College (FCC) in a doubleheader event on April 1, 2024. The games, which showcased the depth and talent of both teams, ended with scores of 10-2 and 5-4 in favor of CSM.

The first game commenced with both teams showing strong defense until CSM broke the deadlock in the second inning, scoring four runs. Abby Norris was particularly notable, contributing significantly with a homer and driving in four runs throughout the game. The team’s offensive momentum continued with Lexi Drayer and Raelynn Hood each adding to the score, demonstrating CSM’s well-rounded attacking capability.
FCC’s efforts were led by Avery Sickeri and Kyleigh Hull, who each managed to secure hits and drive in runs. However, the team struggled to overcome the deficit, despite a solid pitching performance from Mackenzie Murray, who faced 28 batters. The game concluded with CSM leading by eight runs, thanks to a combined effort that saw them notch ten hits and capitalize on FCC’s two errors.
The second game of the doubleheader was a tighter contest, with the lead changing hands in the final innings. FCC appeared poised for a comeback, with Mackenzie Murray driving in two runs to put FCC ahead in the eighth inning. However, CSM’s Laci Johnson responded with a two-run homer, followed by Ashlyn Ferguson’s decisive two-RBI double, clinching the win for CSM in a dramatic finish.
Laci Wood’s pitching for CSM was crucial, facing 32 batters and striking out four over eight innings, demonstrating resilience and skill. On the other side, Hailey Justice of FCC showed commendable effort, pitching 7.2 innings and facing 35 batters.
The doubleheader, played at CSM, was a display of collegiate softball at its best, with both teams showcasing their talents and determination. Although the stands were empty, the intensity on the field told the story of a fiercely contested matchup, underscoring the competitive spirit of both colleges.
