LEONARDTOWN, MD—In a significant move to discuss future projects and initiatives, the Commissioners of St. Mary’s County (CSMC) held a joint meeting with the Commanding Officer of Naval Air Station Patuxent River (NAS PAX), touching on several key community and military base issues. Topics of discussion included the Lancaster Park lease, the designation of Lexington Park as a Sustainable Community, the redevelopment of Millison Plaza, and findings from the Military Installation Resilience Study.

The session, notable for its broad scope, aims to bolster local development while ensuring the resilience and sustainability of the military installation and surrounding areas. This collaborative effort underscores a deep-rooted partnership between St. Mary’s County and NAS PAX, with implications for both community welfare and national defense readiness.

Following the discussions at NAS PAX, the CSMC reconvened in Leonardtown to progress their standard agenda. The meeting opened with customary procedures, including an invocation and the Pledge of Allegiance, before moving to the consent agenda’s approval.

A highlight of the session was the presentation of proclamations recognizing several national observances, including National Fair Housing Month, Week of the Young Child, National Library Week, and National Animal Care & Control Week. These proclamations reflect the commissioners’ commitment to diverse aspects of community well-being, from housing equity to educational programming for the young, the importance of libraries in community engagement, and animal welfare.

In administrative proceedings, the commissioners reviewed forthcoming meeting agendas, demonstrating proactive governance. They approved the Fiscal Year 2025 Senior Rides Grant Application, a testament to St. Mary’s County’s dedication to supporting its senior residents’ mobility and independence. Additionally, the approval of a Memorandum of Agreement with the Southern Maryland Navy Alliance facilitates the release of state grant funding, a step forward in securing resources for critical projects.

The County Administrator Time provided a platform for legislative updates from the Office of the County Attorney, ensuring transparency and keeping the public informed on legal matters affecting county governance.

Looking ahead, the next CSMC business meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 16, 2024, at 9 a.m., an opportunity for public engagement and insight into county decision-making processes. These meetings, vital for community participation, are accessible to the public, with live broadcasts on the St. Mary’s County Government Channel 95 and on-demand viewing options through the county’s YouTube channel.
