In a twist of fate, a Southern Maryland couple narrowly missed the Powerball jackpot by just one number, yet walked away with a smile and $50,004 on April 6. Joseph and Sylvia Riley of St. Mary’s County were among three third-tier prize winners in Maryland from that Saturday’s drawing, securing their substantial win amidst a jackpot frenzy.
The Rileys, who selectively play Mega Millions and Powerball only when jackpots exceed $250 million, found themselves purchasing tickets as the Powerball prize soared to an estimated $1.3 billion. On a routine trip, Joseph picked up a $10 quick-pick ticket from Walmart #1981 on Miramar Way in California, Maryland, storing it securely at home until the drawing.

As the news broke that the grand prize had been claimed in Oregon, the Rileys discovered their smaller, yet significant, victory. Joseph, checking their ticket multiple times, found he had matched four white balls and the Powerball. “I saw I matched four white balls and the Powerball and I got excited,” Joseph recalled. The win was further sweetened by an additional $4 from matching one white ball and the Powerball on a separate line.
Sylvia shared the lighter side of their win, noting her husband’s humor: “He told me we won $50,000 but I owed him money for my portion of the ticket,” she said, laughing.
The Rileys claimed their prize at the Lottery headquarters in Baltimore, choosing to equally divide the winnings. They plan to use the funds to support family members and enjoy a well-deserved family vacation.
This fortunate outcome has brought joy not only to Joseph and Sylvia but also to their family, demonstrating that even without hitting the jackpot, the thrill of the game and the rewards it can bring are still within reach for those who dare to dream.
