The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) recently celebrated its first CSM Day of Service, marking a significant outreach during National Volunteer Month. Nearly 150 faculty, staff, and students dedicated over 450 volunteer hours across Southern Maryland, assisting local nonprofits and parks, in a robust display of community engagement and service.

This inaugural volunteer effort was part of a week-long celebration centered around the inauguration of CSM’s sixth president, Dr. Yolanda Wilson, which began on March 28. The Day of Service reflects Dr. Wilson’s dedication to fostering an environment of inclusivity and civic responsibility among the college community.

Volunteers from CSM engaged in various activities from March 27 to April 6, which included organizing pantry items, developing media strategies, sanitizing children’s toys, sorting historical artifacts, and assisting in fundraising efforts. Noteworthy was the effort in a local horse barn and the meticulous cleanup of parks and beaches. One of the standout initiatives was the packing of nearly 8,000 diapers, prepared for distribution to support parents in need.

The series of volunteer activities not only demonstrates CSM’s commitment to service but also highlights the impact that such initiatives can have on local communities. These efforts provide tangible benefits to nonprofit organizations and improve the overall wellbeing of the surrounding areas.
