In a celebratory dinner held on March 21, 2024, the Calvert Marine Museum in Solomons, Maryland recognized the outstanding contributions of its volunteers during the annual Volunteer Recognition Awards. Jeffrey Murray, the museum director, opened the event by announcing that volunteers had collectively contributed 30,494 hours in the past year, with a value estimated at over $1 million according to Maryland’s volunteer valuation standards.
The ceremony highlighted the efforts of volunteers across different museum sectors, celebrating their commitment and unveiling new recognition levels for their hours of service. Key awards of the evening included the 2023 Group Achievement Award, the Rookie Volunteer of the Year, and the Volunteer of the Year Award.

The Group Achievement Award was presented to the Paleo Volunteer Group for their exemplary service in the Paleo Prep Lab. This group plays a crucial role in educating visitors about fossils and has been instrumental in uncovering significant microfossils essential for ongoing research. Members Amy Carter, Beth Meck, Nathan Rafalowski, and Katherine Rioux were specifically acknowledged for their contributions.
Nancy Krause received the Rookie Volunteer of the Year award. Since joining, she has been a vibrant presence in the Museum Store, actively participated in Volunteer Council meetings, supported numerous special events, and consistently offered her services wherever needed.
The most poignant moment of the evening came as the museum posthumously awarded Bill Prochownik the Volunteer of the Year. Known affectionately as “Robo-Bill,” he was celebrated for his dedication to the museum’s paleontology efforts, particularly his work at excavation sites.
In his closing remarks, Murray expressed deep gratitude to all the volunteers: “Thank you to all our volunteers that give so much of themselves to help make CMM the very best it can be. We couldn’t do it without each one of you!”
