LEONARDTOWN, MD – During their latest business meeting, the Commissioners of St. Mary’s County (CSMC) moved forward with several agenda items including the approval of budget amendments and bond issuance resolutions, alongside recognizing several national observances.

The meeting opened with an invocation and the pledge, promptly followed by the consent agenda’s approval, setting the tone for a session marked by significant fiscal decisions and community acknowledgments.

Notably, the commissioners issued proclamations honoring National Nurses Week, National Skilled Nursing Care Week, and National Travel and Tourism Week, celebrating the essential roles these sectors play in the community.

The primary focus of the session was the formal adoption of the Program Open Space conversion. This initiative involves swapping the usage of properties between the Great Mills Swimming Pool and the Gymnastics Center, aiming to better serve the community’s recreational needs.

During the County Administrator’s segment, the commissioners approved several critical financial adjustments. These included a budget amendment that added $139,374 to the Commissioner’s Emergency Reserve from salary savings, reflecting prudent fiscal management. Additional approvals were made to enhance the Highway Division’s snow removal capabilities through increased budget allocations.

A pivotal moment came with the approval of Resolution 2024-14, which supplements Resolution 2022-20. This new resolution authorizes the issuance of general obligation bonds, designating further projects that can be financed through the proceeds from bond sales, showcasing the county’s ongoing commitment to infrastructure development and public services enhancement.

After deliberations, the commissioners concluded the meeting, setting the stage for subsequent gatherings. They reconvened at 1:30 p.m. for a Budget Work Session and later at 6:30 p.m. for a Public Forum, where community members could engage directly with local governance.

The next CSMC business meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 14, 2024, at 9 a.m. This meeting, along with a follow-up Budget Work Session at 1:30 p.m., will take place in the CSMC Meeting Room on the first floor of the Chesapeake Building in Leonardtown. The community is encouraged to participate in these sessions, either in person or via the St. Mary’s County Government Channel 95 or YouTube.
