With the sun shining and the weather getting warmer, it’s time to head to the lake for some summer fun. The Potomac Patuxent and Bay is a great place to fish for a variety of species, including rockfish, bluefish, slot reds, and puppy drum.
The fishing season in the Potomac Patuxent and Bay begins in June, and the best time to fish is dusk and dawn. The fish are drawn to the surface of the water by the moving tide, calm winds, and determination. As always, dusk and dawn are best.

If you’re targeting a rockfish, you can use a variety of lures or live bait. For example, a paddle tail jigs, bucktails, swimming plugs, spoons, Beetle spins, Perch Hounders, and Rooster Tails can all be used to catch rockfish. As a general rule, you can expect to catch a couple of fish per day.
However, fishing for alewife is a challenge this year. The bait is apparently still off shore in the Atlantic. If you’re looking for alewife, you can try casting a small net or jig under a pier or near the mouth of the bay. You can also try using a live eel or Cobia jigs. Alewife are a voracious species, and you may just catch a big one.
