LEONARDTOWN, MD-Amber Grabowski, Program Manager of the St. Mary’s County Health Department (SMCHD) School-Based Health Center (SBHC) Program, received the Rising Leadership Award from the Maryland Assembly on School-Based Health Care (MASBHC) on May 15, 2024. The award celebrates exceptional dedication, leadership, and innovation in school-based health care across Maryland.

In collaboration with St. Mary’s County Public Schools (SMCPS), SMCHD launched two school-based health centers in August 2022, located at Margaret Brent Middle School and Spring Ridge Middle School. These centers offer primary and urgent care to all SMCPS students and staff during and after school hours. Additionally, the centers serve the broader community after school hours, with plans to introduce behavioral health services in the 2024-2025 school year. Community members are encouraged to enroll in the SBHC program to access these services.

“I am honored to be selected as Rising Leader by the MASBHC,” said Grabowski. “I look forward to continuing to impact the health of students in our community and advocating for SBHCs at local, state, and national levels.”

“Amber Grabowski has played a pivotal role in the development of our SBHCs,” said Dr. Meena Brewster, St. Mary’s County Health Officer. “In less than two years, Ms. Grabowski and our SBHC team have enrolled over 2,000 community members and provided essential health care to numerous local families.”
